Research undertaken during a study by Patterson and Ellis (2003) into the management of Australian university websites identified the desire of university website managers to communicate with each other and to share information relating to their work and technical environment. One hundred percent (100%) of those interviewed during the study expressed interest in reviewing a collegial website, with 79% willing to contribute to the site if it was worthwhile.
This site is seen as a means of furthering the research into Australian University websites and to encourage the ongoing discussion and information sharing amongst the sites' membership (initially those who participated in the above survey, but it is possible that the subject may be of interest to a wider audience).
Initially, this site will provide a forum for members to be able to discuss a wide range of issues via several online forums, share a range of documents (university site usability and accessibility policies, research papers, etc) and collaborate on common initiatives. Future directions will be determined by the member group.
Our first workshop - Unisites Get Together - was held at at Ausweb '04. This was a successful meeting, and notes are available for members.
If you are part of a core web development team at a University or TAFE you can apply for membership. You would most likely be involved with organisation-wide initiatives, public (corporate) website governance, etc, rather than day to day operational activities.
Membership is 'approved' on a case-by-case basis, and you may asked for additional information to determine your eligibility. You may also be directed to other forums for technology-specific issues.
Members from other countries are also most welcome to join.
